Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization is the natural way to make your websites come up in the search engines, so that you get more visitors and hence more conversions.

Optimizing your website can increase ranking of your pages in Search engines. This almost always means more targeted traffic. People who come to your website from a search engine are more likely to engage in business with you since they were specifically seeking a service or a product or some information before they found your website.

What are the stages involved?

There are three stages to the SEO process. Analysis, implementation and maintenance. Below is an overview of what is done as part of each stage.

Stage I - Analysis

Analysis stage is the first and the most important one in Search Engine Optimization. A thorough analysis would make implementation more effective, and hence these processes are implemented as part of the analysis stage.

1. Keyword analysis

The list of keywords that you think are relevant to the website are chosen based on the customer's suggestions. This list is validated based on softwares like Wordtracker, Overture search suggestion tools and research on competitor sites.

The list is finalized based on two parameters:
  • Popularity of the keyword – The more popular, the better it is.
  • Competitiveness of the keyword – the less competitive, the better it is.

2. Web analytics software

Measurements are an important part of SEM service and a web analytics software is essential to monitor the website traffic. The status of your website and the performance of the existing pages can be monitored using a web analytics software.

3. Analysing website and navigation

The target website would be analysed for the following:
  • Navigation and structure of the website
  • Features like javascripts, cookies, session Ids, frames, flash, etc.
This is to make sure that your website does not use any technology or elements that makes it difficult for a search engine robot to crawl your webpages.

The result of this Analysis stage is a set of suggestions that would help you make your website better and ready for Search Engine Optimization. These minor changes would go a long way towards making your website search engine friendly.

4. Recommending a content strategy

Success of SEM is dependent to a large extent on quality and relevance of content on the website. The best way to implement this is to make sure that there is enough information on the website. A good content strategy would mean better rankings for your website, for as the saying in the internet world goes "Content is king."

Stage II - Implementation

This is when the actual implementation works starts. This stage comes after the recommendations from the Analysis phase are implemented.

1. Web development modifications

Following tasks are implemented at this stage:
  • Adding new pages, if any
  • Modifying structure of pages, if required
  • Removing elements, if required
  • Adding robots.txt file to make sure certain pages or directories are not crawled
  • Adding or modifying site map
  • Adding new links within the pages
  • Adding header tags

2. Optimizing the tags and content

The keyword list finalized as part of keyword analysis is used to optimize the tags and content on every page in the website. The following tags would be optimised:
  • Title tags
  • Meta description tags
  • Meta keyword tags
  • Alt tags
  • Hyperlinks
In addition to the tags, the content and the headings will also be optimised based on the selected keywords.

3. Submitting to Directories

Once the previous stages are completed, the site would be ready for submissions to various directories. The best practise is to let the Search engines find your sites in natural ways. But, if required, sites can be submitted manually.

Stage III - Maintenance and Link Building

Once the implementation stage is over, the rather extended and disciplined maintenance stage starts. Following tasks are involved:

1. Monitoring and reporting

Web analytics softwares are used to study the visitor traffic. The insights from this study are used to make any modifications to the website or content, if necessary. Apart from the visitor traffic, the site's ranking in search engines for the selected keywords is aloso monitored. Ideally, the data must collected every week and formal reports made once a month.

2. Link building

This activity would play a major role in your search engine ranking. Search engines pays a lot of importance on links pointing to your website. We are talking about genuine links here and not links procured from sites that have hundreds of links (called link farms). The link building has to be done on a regular basis, so that the ranking of your site does not go down.
